Now, How Does This Relate To The GOAT Debate?

Contrary to what most people might say

Your brand is not what you do

It’s not your brand elements coming together etc

Your brand is who people say you are

The impression people have of you

It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes…

I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel

So you can’t really “create” your brand

You can only do you

Then people will be the ones to say who you are

Based on their own individual experiences of you (or your brand)

That’s why there’s no best Disney movie of all time

Or best footballer of all time

Because it will always be subjective.

For example, is the greatest painting of all time the Mona Lisa?…

Or is it the painting given to a daughter by her father on his deathbed

And so it is a futile effort to try to be the best designer or design agency in the world

Because you can’t truly be the best “anything” in the world

It is a more worthy use of your time to attempt to be the best in SOMEONE’S world

Hence a better use of your company’s resources to serve the ONE CUSTOMER you’re interacting with at every given point

And curate the best possible experience for that customer

With the hope that you’ll have a shot at being that customer’s personal best.

Ever felt like…

“The standard of some vintage movies outweighs the standard of what they make now

Like they just don’t make movies like that no more”

I feel the same way

Though I don’t know if it’s cus I had more time back then to really digest the movies.

Or it’s just a thing about people loving movies that came out around the time they had the freest time.

Cus everyone I’ve asked, “what are your favorite movies of all time?”

End up calling 2/3 movies that came out around the time they were in uni.

And they feel the same affinity towards movies that came out in “their time”.

Same with cartoons.

My generation prefers cartoons we watched on STV.

The next-gen prefers cartoons they watched on Cartoon Network.

And even Cartoon Network still has like two or more generations in it lol. The first set that watched the classic Ben 10

And the newer guys

Then every adult feels an affinity to the movies (or whatever they did for fun) – during their younger days. And says

“The standard of some vintage movies outweighs the standard of what they make now”

Vintage being more like “when I was younger”. Which is relative per person

PS. And this is super random. Because I didn’t think of putting this here when I started thinking about this

But it just occurred to me that that’s the beauty of 7pm TV

We all used to have a better time with the entertainment of our own generation

But now…

With adulthood, our life is a bit different.

More shege per second seen than enjoyment.

Want to increase cash reserve? Try this.

If you run a business that does pay on delivery

You’ll notice that you can have money stuck in inventory and products yet to be delivered.

But not enough cash reserve.

Imagine having inventory worth 2m, deliveries sent worth 200k, but account balance on 2k.

And your ad budget has almost finished, delivery people waiting for balance, and other business expenses piling up.

You’re paper rich. But got no paper.

Here’s how we built cash reserve:

First I’ll share the thought process

So that even if you can’t apply the exact same actions in your own business, you’ll be able to think of how you can.

The idea is simple. Reduce the time gaps of when you get cash (into the business).

These are the way you can do it:

1. Reduce delivery time

No disrespect to GIGL but they’re not what they used to be so we changed to Courier Plus who deliver faster and we get our payments faster too.

These ones have their own wahala too but sadly in Nigeria, you manage the best devil.

2. Narrow delivery locations

Delivering to other states takes longer so target just your state or geopolitical zone.

Eg. Our target audience at Scent Hut – Rich Nigerians who like designer fragrances is an audience size of 6m to 8.1m.

Yes we’re that badass at targeting lol

In times when we want to increase cash flow we target just Lagosians. Which is an audience size of 2m.

I’m stating the audience size because it’s important that you don’t use one that’s too narrow.

And you might ask, why not just do that everytime if that gives faster turnover?

Well because it’s a tradeoff.

Do you want to be a global brand or you just want to be in one small corner as long as you’re making money.

The latter has better long-term rewards. Which makes it the better play.

So as a good business person you need to find balance

Hope I’m not getting too technical? I like to keep these as simple as possible.

3. Negotiate a NET deal with your supplier

NET means the amount of time it takes to make/get a payment

So if it takes 7 days to deliver your product and get paid, you have a NET-7

If you have a NET-7 and you’re able to negotiate a NET-7 with your supplier it means you won’t have to pay your supplier until you get paid.

Simply means, more money.

My friend Vivian was able to negotiate a NET-30 with her shoe supplier which gave her a lot of freedom

Not everyone can pull this off because that’s some business ninja shit.

You’ll need:

– To be trustworthy

– Good negotiation skills (which you can get @insightsfinrik)

– To have an already existing solid relationship with the supplier

4. Turn your product into an offer

I once sold blenders online. And with every purchase you get a knife set and a juice cup.

Though the business failed. But if it worked I’ll have been able to add cash to the business from the extra items I added to turn it into an offer.

Did you know?

Probably 90% of business owners have a boring status that looks like a marketplace?

And if your status is boring people won’t open it. And if they don’t open it how will they buy?

5. Take a line of credit

Which can be used to put more cash in the business to make business moves like clearing goods, meeting surging demand, etc.

Always funny when I hear people say things like “this is expensive”

This is why when it comes to advertising and life in general…

There’s nothing like “cheap” or “expensive”. There’s only value for money.

The real question is…

BONUS: How Much Traffic Should You Expect To Get In Return For Various Ad Budgets

Just so I reiterate this here, I’ll say the only right answer is to test.

Because the market decides.

However in my own experience, I’ve found that you can average around N200 to N100 per lead if you have a good ad.

And if you’re running an ad to sell right off the bat, you can average around N4,500 to N2,000 cost per purchase.

Now obviously it varies across industries and other factors like the quality of your ad etc. Because you cannot expect to use N4,500 to N2,000 to sell a house or land. If not everyone would have been doing it.

I’ve also generated leads for as low as N15 and have seen people do it for as low as N10.

And I’ve seen cost per purchase as low as N800 too.

At the end of the day there is no “guesswork” or sitting from the sidelines predicting when it comes to business.

You must put your product, offer, ad, etc out there. Because what?

The market decides.
